What would you do if you found out you had an identical twin sibling on the other side of the world that you never knew about? Freak out? Welcome the news with open arms? Get together with your surprise sib and play some wacky tricks on your friends? Well, twentysomethings Anaïs and Samantha have probably thought through all those options and more.
It all started when Samantha, who’s an actress living in Los Angeles, got a short message via Facebook from a French girl she had never heard of before.
Turns out the two girls were both born on the same day in 1987 in South Korea, were both put into foster care, and were both soon after adopted by different families on different continents. The really crazy thing was that until one of Anaïs’ friends happened upon a YouTube clip of Samantha’s, and noticed the amazing resemblance between the two girls, neither of the sisters even had a clue that the other existed.
From there it was a process of checking Facebook pages, dropping tweets, and eventually talking live via Skype.
Anaïs described the process like this:
Social media & I have had this weird relationship where I think I was better at hiding my personal information rather than sharing them with others. But at this particular moment, I could follow Sam through her life of the last & lost past years. I was already getting to know her without her knowing I was even here.
The two possible sisters decided to start a Kickstarter campaign in an effort to raise enough to meet up, perform DNA tests to verify everything and then hopefully create a documentary about the whole experience that they’ll call Twinsters. I personally love this little clip where they thank everybody for contributing to the project.
They may be thankful for generous donors, but their eventual face-to-face will really be all thanks to the interconnected wonders of social networking. And here you thought it was only good for looking up old friends to see how bald they got.
