Movie Monday: No Good Deed

One featured a creepy killer. The other featured a tail-less dolphin. Together, they managed to do something that even a certain megalomaniacal villain with an Infinity Stone couldn’t: Topple Guardians of the Galaxy.

After nearly two solid months of superhero domination—mainly by Guardians but with a solid assist by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—another film scaled to the top of the box office. No Good Deed, a low-budget thriller starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, earned an estimated $24.5 million to claim the win.

Dolphin Tale 2 finished second to Deed, splashing its way to a $16.6 million open. That take was perhaps a little disappointing for this family friendly, squeaky-clean feature: The original Dolphin Tale earned about $19.2 million during its first sally forth. But that’s not exactly a Hunger Games-like beginning, either, and the first movie proved to be something of a slow-burning surprise hit, eventually finishing with $72.3 mil. These dolphins could have the flippers for a long swim.

Guardians, meanwhile, slipped all the way down to third place with $8 million, crossing over the $300 million threshold for its North American run. (It has now earned $305.9 million.) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—as it has for most of its short history—finished right behind Guardians with a $4.8 million weekend.

Let’s Be Cops wrapped up the Top Five with $4.3 million.

Final figures update: 1. No Good Deed, $24.3 million; 2. Dolphin Tale 2, $16.6 million; 3. Guardians of the Galaxy, $8.1 million; 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, $4.9 million; 5. Let’s Be Cops, $4.4 million.
