Either Identity Thief had a good weekend, or star Melissa McCarthy is getting pretty adept at using that credit-card maker.
Identity Thief, an R-rated comedy with McCarthy in the titular role, pilfered an estimated $36.6 million from moviegoers this weekend—a boffo opening for an original R-rated comedy (particularly one released in the traditionally fallow month of February). Some say that the flick (which also stars Jason Bateman) could’ve run away with even more cash had most of the northeast not been covered in a fathom of snow. But perhaps it shouldn’t surprise us. Jason Statham flops aside, movies featuring thieves are doing well this winter. We haven’t seen a take this strong since The Hobbit burgled $36.9 million last December.
The weather couldn’t chill Warm Bodies, either. The zombie romantic comedy—dubbed a zom romcom by some—proved it ain’t no bomb, chasing down and chewing up another $11.5 million this weekend. It held off newcomer Side Effects for second place, which meant Steven Soderbergh’s twisty mystery had to settle for bronze. Oh, and a $10 million gross.
Silver Linings Playbook continues to draw an audience, scoring $6.9 million for a fourth-place finish. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters conjured up another $5.8 million to round out the Top 5. Oh, and the IMAX 3-D re-release of Top Gun? It gunned down a mere $1.9 million, landing outside the Top 10. It cruised in at No. 11.
Final figures update: 1. Identity Thief, $34.6 million; 2. Warm Bodies, $11.4 million; 3. Side Effects, $9.3 million; 4. Silver Linings Playbook, $6.4 million; 5. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, $5.8 million.
