Both the laws of physics and economics dictated that Gravity’s run couldn’t last forever. But who would’ve figured that the cosmic drama would be pulled back to earth by a crass, fake octogenarian?
Jacka‑‑ Presents: Bad Grandpa dottered to the top of the box office this weekend, using its walker to knock Gravity off that lofty perch and collecting a tidy (estimated) $32 million. And while we at Plugged In may be a bit mystified by the drawing power of anything from the folks at Jacka‑‑, there’s no question some people like this stuff. It was the first time all month that a movie besides Gravity had claimed the top spot.
But don’t feel too poorly for the Sandra Bullock/George Clooney space voyager. It still retained a good chunk of its audience and earned $20.3 million, bringing the film’s total domestic gross to $199.8 million. By the time you read this, it might well’ve become the year’s ninth movie to earn more than $200 million.
Captain Phillips also continues to perform well. The watery drama earned $11.8 million to finish third, helping to spoil the debut of director Ridley Scott’s latest movie, The Counselor. Though, truth be told, that film did a nice job sinking itself. Despite a cast stacked with A-listers (Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt), both critics and audiences both felt the flick was in some serious need of, well, counseling. It got poor reviews from both and wound up making just $8 million. Brad Pitt alone normally makes more than that just to floss his teeth.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 rounds out the Top Five with a $6.1-million payday weekend, pushing its total earnings north of $100 million. You can buy a lot of Ragu with that kind of moola.
Oh, and for those readying themselves for awards season, two potential Oscar contenders are making a strong impression in limited release. 12 Years a Slave earned $2.2 million in just 123 theaters, which was good enough for eighth place, and Robert Redford’s All Is Lost collected slightly more than $500,000 in 81 art houses for eighteenth—just about $7,000 behind I’m in Love With a Church Girl, according to early estimates.
Final figures upate: 1. Jacka– Presents: Bad Grandpa, $32.1 million; 2. Gravity, $20.1 million; 3. Captain Phillips, $11.6 million; 4. the Counselor, $7.8 million; 5. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, $6.3 million.
