Movie Monday: ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ Blow Up the Box Office

In a movie weekend that’s been nicknamed “Barbenheimer” by some publications, the box office results didn’t disappoint.

Barbie won the weekend with an estimated $155 million in domestic ticket sales. That alone earns it the title of top opening weekend film of 2023, ousting The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $146.4 million when it opened in April. And since Barbie only cost $145 million to make, it’s already proven itself an impressive investment.

Barbie still has a way to go if she wants to dominate the Italian plumber’s $1.3 billion total earnings. But with a global take-home of $337 million (again, topping Super Mario Bros.’s global opening of $313.8 million), she’s well on her way to dominating flicks based on children’s toys.

Oppenheimer, while not exploding with the same popularity as Barbie, still outperformed every other R-rated film this year, taking home $80.5 million domestically ($174.2 million globally). John Wick: Chapter 4 previously held that honor, opening with $73.4 million ($148.8 million globally) back in March.

Sound of Freedom dropped down to third place this week, earning $20.1 million. But it managed to knock last week’s previous top earner, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (which earned $19.5 million), down to 4th place—a staggering feat considering Sound of Freedom is in its third weekend while Dead Reckoning is only in its second.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny rounds out the top five with $6.7 million, bringing its worldwide total to $335 million, even less than Barbie’s opening.

Other newcomer this weekend, Theater Camp, came in 15th with just $266,000 in the domestic box office.
