Movie Monday: ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Freezes the Competition

It’s decided: Po and Paul couldn’t hold a candle to Frozen Empire—they just didn’t have the chops.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire brought home an estimated $45.2 million in its opening weekend. That’s just a shiver better than Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which earned $44 million in its own opening weekend in 2021. But add in an additional $16.4 million from international markets and that brings Frozen Empire’s takings to $61.6 million worldwide. Not bad for the sequel of a reboot.

But it’s not the only sequel to a reboot doing well.

Dune: Part Two drifted into second with $17.6 million, bringing its domestic earnings to about $233 million and crossing the half billion mark with worldwide earnings at $574 million. Seems like the spice business is going well for House Atreides.

Kung Fu Panda 4 was close behind Dune, bringing in $16.8 million. But it still managed to beat down new horror flick Immaculate, which came in fourth with $5.3 million.

Arthur the King closed out the top five with an estimated $4.3 million.

Emily Tsiao

Emily studied film and writing when she was in college. And when she isn’t being way too competitive while playing board games, she enjoys food, sleep, and geeking out with her husband indulging in their “nerdoms,” which is the collective fan cultures of everything they love, such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate and Lord of the Rings.
