Movie Monday: A Three-peat for ‘Moana 2’

A Marvel antihero and the riders of Rohan charged into theaters this weekend, angling to toss Moana off her movie throne. But no dice: Disney’s Polynesian princess still reigns supreme.

For the third straight weekend, Moana 2 won the box-office title in North America. The film collected an estimated $26.6 million, which brought its overall earnings to $337.5 million. Add the $379.5 million the film has hauled in overseas, and Moana 2 has now pocketed a total of $717 million—sprinting past the $643.3 million the original Moana made in 2016.

Wicked: Part 1 finished the weekend in its familiar second slot, collecting $22.5 million stateside to bring its own overall North American gross to $359 million.

In the Marvel comics, Kraven the Hunter is known as one of Spider-Man’s more formidable adversaries. But faced with the big game of the box office (Moana 2 and Wicked) Kraven came up empty. Kraven the Hunter earned just $11 million—a record low for a Marvel/Sony superhero flick—and landed with a thud in third place.

Gladiator II found its way to a $7.8 million weekend and a fourth-place finish. That spoiled the box-office charge of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which finished fifth with $4.6 million.
