Justin and Selena’s Big Date

justin and selena.JPGYou’re the most popular 17-year-old on the planet. You want to make an impression on your girl. What do you do?

Well, if you’re Justin Bieber, you rent Los Angeles’ Staples Center—that’s right, the 20,000-seat home of the L.A. Lakers—for … an intimate dinner for two.

After girlfriend Selena Gomez’s Sept. 23 concert at the nearby Nokia Theater, Justin whisked her away via an underground tunnel to a romantic, candlelight dinner in the massive arena. They munched on steak and pasta and watched Titanic, according to various media reports. Justin’s message to guys looking for a romantic clue: “Romance isn’t dead,” he tweeted afterward. “Treat your lady right fellas.”

As I read this story, I recalled a quote from another Justin from earlier this year as he reminisced about his own high-profile teen love affair with another Disney princess.

In a June interview with Vanity Fair, Justin Timberlake said of his relationship with Britney Spears (which lasted from 1999 to 2002), “I just don’t think we were normal; there was nothing normal about our existence. We spent way too much time being the biggest thing for teenyboppers.” He continued:

It was exciting that we were having so much success and we could do whatever we wanted. And I mean that about everybody: Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, Britney, Christina. At that time, we could literally go, 'Oh, man, let's go to Bali,' and we'd be on a plane to Bali. We were little kids with big toys. You do the math—that's not going to last.

Biggest thing for teenyboppers … Nothing normal about our existence. … We were little kids with big toys. … That’s not going to last. Sound familiar?

A short postscript: For anyone who thinks the movies we watch don’t influence us, consider this. Bieber reportedly got the idea for his arena-sized date from Adam Sandler’s movie Mr. Deeds, in which his character surprises his love interest (played by Winona Ryder) with a private dinner for two at Madison Square Garden. Here’s hoping Justin and Selena don’t take Titanic’s romanticized, throw-caution-to-the-wind messages to heart in a similar way.
