What does it take to knock the biggest hit of 2017 off the box office’s top perch? A big Rock, apparently.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle—starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson—welcomed itself into first place this weekend. It earned an estimated $36 million in North America and claimed its first box office victory after three weeks on the charts.
Jumanji bested the weekend’s only major newcomer, Insidious: The Last Key, which settled for second after scaring up $29.3 million. But even though Insidious could only muster a silver-medal finish and has only earned enough to pay Tom Cruise’s HOA dues, it’s still 2018’s biggest hit so far: (Jumanji, released in the waning days of 2017, doesn’t count.)
From The Last Key to The Last Jedi we go. The latest Star Wars flick slid from first to third, banking $23.6 million and pushing its overall domestic earnings to $572.5 million. That’s a touch more than fellow Star Wars actioner Rogue One earned during its 2016-17 run, but it has some work to do to catch Star Wars: A Force Awakens. That trilogy starter collected $936.7 million in North America alone—making it the highest-grossing movie in history (not adjusting for inflation, of course).
The Greatest Showman tapped its way into fourth place with $13.8 million, while fellow toe-tapper Pitch Perfect 3 settled into fifth with $10.2 million.
A few Oscar hopefuls started pushing wider this weekend as well. Molly’s Game expanded into about 1,600 theaters and finished seventh with $7 million, while Darkest Hour—fresh off a Golden Globe victory for star Gary Oldman—grew to about 1,700 theaters and finished eighth with $6.4 million. I, Tonya, now playing in about 242 theaters, finished 12th with $2.4 million, and The Post jumped into 36 theaters and earned $1.7 million for 15th.
