Make way for the king. Stephen King, that is.
IT Chapter Two, the sequel to 2017’s record-setting IT (both of which were based on King’s 1986 novel), scared up a huge win this weekend, gobbling up an estimated $91 million in North America for a bury-your-head-in-the-covers first-place finish. That gives Chapter Two the second-biggest horror opening of all time. Who’s No. 1? Do we really have to say … IT? (Chapter Two’s predecessor earned $123 million in its opening frame.)
It would seem that nightmares don’t recognize borders, either. Chapter Two earned another $94 million overseas, giving the fright flick a truly terrifying $185 million global haul.
Compared to the monstrous moneymaker of Chapter Two, every other movie was just (ahem) clowning around.
Two-time champ Angel Has Fallen really did fall this weekend … to No. 2. It earned $6 million over the weekend, pushing its total tally to $53.5 million. Good Boys slid to third with $5.4 million. And The Lion King continues to flash its aged teeth, collecting another $4.2 million for fourth. The Lion King has now roared to a grand total of $529.1 million. That’s about $106 million more than the original classic banked back in 1994. (Of course, if you adjust for inflation, the original King is still way out in front: According to Box Office Mojo, the 1994 flick made the equivalent of $803.2 million in 2019 money.)
The Christian flick Overcomer hasn’t made quite that much cash, but it continues to hang out in the top five. It earned nearly $3.8 million, according to early estimates, pushing its total to $24.7 million.
