There was a time, not all that long ago, when you had to wait to see a photo you snapped.
Now, I know that’s a hard thing to imagine for you young ‘uns who are used to clicking off a handful of pics with your phone and posting them to the Web before you can say “Instagram.” But I remember taking a roll of pictures on my trusty old analog SLR and having to wait to see how good those scenic shots or smiling pics of friends actually turned out. And if I was really eager, I could run the roll over to the corner drugstore and get ’em back in, oh, about an hour.
And you know what? It was kind of fun. There was a sweet anticipation in the mix. A sense of waiting to open a present long after depressing that shutter button.
Well, for you youthful hipsters who want to be all countercultural in the photo realm, there’s now a way to get that yesteryear feeling without having to dig out your Granny’s dusty ol’ film-filled Kodamatic. It’s a free iPhone app called 1-Hour Photo.
That’s right: Just as the app’s name suggests, after you click your iPhone pic you’ll need to wait a whole hour for your photo to virtually “develop” before you can see how the image turned out. And guess what? That means you’ll actually have to spend time enjoying that memorable moment you’re trying to capture, rather than being totally consumed by pictures on your phone while everybody else has fun. It’s a win-win.
The app comes with another cool feature as well. It packs an automatic black-and-white filter that’s not only incredibly crisp, but adds a sweet retro feel to your pictures. And if you want to upload your work to your social network or print it out for proper framing, well, after an hour it’s up to you.
Oh, and there’s one last old-school benefit to this app that some of your friends will definitely be thankful for: Your phone’s front-facing camera is disabled. Selfies begone!
