The Hidden World was anything but hidden in its second weekend of business. The last chapter in the How to Train Your Dragon series experienced nary a hiccup as Toothless (the dragon) took home its second box-office win in a row.
It did so by edging another franchise making its final curtain call. And while Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral might’ve boasted some flying false teeth, it wasn’t enough to harness the still soaring Toothless. Dragon collected just a sliver over $30 million, according to early estimates, while Madea stuffed $27 million into her box-office casket. But weep not for Tyler Perry’s dearly departed mad black woman: Madea’s obituary will read that she made more than a half-billion dollars for his/her creator over the course of the character’s nine films. And, of course, that tally will increase over the next few weeks. A Family Funeral isn’t dead yet.
The box office saw a big drop-off after the weekend’s big two. Alita: Battle Angel finished third with a mere $7 million. But that paltry figure comes with an important asterisk. After many predicted that the film would be the year’s first cataclysmic bomb, Alita has earned a halfway respectable $72.2 million in North America—and about four times that much overseas. Alita has earned $350.5 million overall, or twice the estimated $170 million that its makers spent creating it. We may see a sequel yet.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part snapped into fourth place with $6.6 million, which brought its overall take to about $91.7 million.
Green Book, which won an Oscar for Best Picture last weekend, reaped the rewards of its controversial victory. The historical drama checked into fifth place with $4.7 million, a 121% increase over what the film did the weekend before.
Other Oscar winners took advantage of the slow box office, too. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse—winner of not only Best Animated Feature Oscar, but a Plugged In Movie Award, too—earned $2.1 million, or nearly 140% more than it did last weekend. And while A Star is Born might’ve underperformed at the Academy Awards, it saw a weekend-over-weekend increase of nearly 210%. It finished the weekend with $1.9 million, pushing its overall domestic earnings to $212.9 million.
