Disney and Marvel may have trotted out their two tiniest superheroes this weekend. But the pair made a pretty big impact.
Ant-Man and the Wasp scurried about the cinematic landscape and dragged an estimated $76 million into Disney’s domestic anthill. Those aren’t quite Black Panther or Avengers numbers, admittedly, but it was more than enough to best a bevy of blockbuster holdovers and claim the weekend’s box-office title.
Geeky numbers interlude: According to Box Office Mojo, Ant-Man and the Wasp’s victory marks the ninth time this year that a Disney/Marvel superhero has stood at No. 1. (Throw in Deadpool 2, and it’s the 10th time a Marvel character has done so.) Oh, and if you had any question as to the most dominant film studio, question no more: Between Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Incredibles 2 and now Ant-Man and the Wasp, Disney’s led the box office for 12 of the year’s 27 weekends. Not even Ted Williams boasted that sort of batting average.

Speaking of Incredibles 2, Disney/Pixar’s latest animated entry held onto second place for the third straight weekend, collecting about $29 million. That Jack-Jacks up Incredibles 2’s overall domestic gross to $504.4 million—the first animated movie ever to crack the $500 million mark. Oh, it’s also the 11th highest-grossing film of all time, with its total enough to be the top-grossing of the year four times in the last decade. But it’s only good enough for third place in 2018, trailing both Black Panther and Infinity War. I’ve said this for a while now, but this year it’s indisputable: Superheroes rule.
What’s fourth on the year’s highest-grossing list, you ask? I’m so happy you did, because it’s none other than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which finished third this weekend. Fallen Kingdom finished just a fossilized hair behind Incredibles 2, banking $28.6 million to push its overall earnings to a tidy $333.3 million.
The First Purge, the fourth flick in Universal Picture’s Purge series, scared up $17.2 million during the weekend. Sicario: Day of the Soldado finished fifth with $7.3 million.
