Wendy Lynn Brion says, “Actually, I live about a half hour from one of the towns where Unstoppable was filmed …Tyrone, PA. We pass through the town every time we go to Altoona, so it was a lot of fun seeing the town from a different perspective. My husband and father both worked for the department of transportation and recognized many of the other towns filmed in the movie.”
Lisa Stein jokes, “Well I was thinking of planning our vacation around Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. Lol.”
Becky Hull Tidberg says she “took a tour of the Bridges of Madison County.”
Eva Jones Simcox “hiked the area on Kauai, Hawaii, where Jurassic Park was filmed.”
Joseph Hayes “sat on the same park bench as Forrest Gump.”
They were all answering the question, “Have you ever visited a place because you saw it in a movie or TV show?” And that question, in turn, was triggered by this Culture Clip, derived from an Associated Press report:
Fans of The Hunger Games are flocking to a North Carolina forest where the movie was filmed, according to a local newspaper. DuPont State Recreational Forest has welcomed an estimated 327,000 visitors through the end of October, a more than 25% increase compared to attendance for all of 2011.
So it’s time to turn this subject over to you, our dedicated blog readers: Have you traveled somewhere to see something you saw on a screen? And since this is a forum in which we can take things a step to two deeper than on Facebook, do you have any ideas about what it says about us that we sometimes crave the things fictional characters have and want to go to places they go in stories that have, really, so little to do with our own lives? And, conversely, what does it say about us when we refuse to admit that we’re tempted by such things?
