Album Review

Pro-Social Content

Tarzan’s attempt to grasp his humanity is articulated in several songs by Phil Collins. Sung from a mother gorilla’s perspective, “You’ll Be in My Heart” calms the orphan’s fears with love and reassurance (“I will protect you from all around you/I will be here don’t you cry”). Lacking human role models, he is urged to strive for understanding, seek wisdom and develop strength (“Son of Man”). On “Strangers Like Me,” Tarzan gets a glimpse of the civilized world and longs to quench his thirst for knowledge. To combat danger and heartache, “Two Worlds” recommends love, faith, hope and peace.

Objectionable Content

Minor. “Two Worlds” places trust in fate (Prov. 3:5-6, Ps. 32:8).

Summary Advisory

Collins’ percussion-heavy beats punctuate rumbling jungle anthems, each of which conveys a different facet of Tarzan’s self-discovery while placing a premium on family. We probably didn’t need four variations of “Two Worlds,” but this warm collection has a good heart.
