Teen Cannabis Use Linked to Memory Problems
What? A recent study from the University of California San Diego linked teen cannabis use to “slower growth in memory, attention, language, and processing speed.” The report found that, while those using cannabis initially developed normally, over time they leveled off while those not using cannabis continued to grow.
So What? The fact that cannabis affects the brain is nothing new—it is a psychoactive substance, after all—but this study highlights the long-term risks of cannabis to a developing mind.
Now What? Communicate the dangers associated with cannabis and THC use to your kids, and check out studies like these with your kids so they can see the risks for themselves.
Australian Music Charts to Ban AI Music
What? Effective immediately, the Australian Recording Industry Association banned all songs from music charts that aren’t “substantially human-made.” The ARIA allows for artificial intelligence to still be used in specific circumstances, but a human artist must be the dominant creative force in creating a piece of music.
So What? The rule change comes in the wake of a generative AI cover of Madonna’s 1989 song “Like a Prayer,” which peaked at number two on music charts and generated a substantial backlash.
Now What? This decision is part of a move to better regulate the use of AI in creative endeavors while tackling the problem of AI software drawing from human sources without permission. Expect to see more guidelines like Australia’s coming soon.
Why is Gen Z ‘Soft Socializing?’
What? In a world of dating apps and digital connection, Gen Z is pushing back with what’s being called “soft socializing.” What’s that, you may ask? Getting together in-person to enjoy “relaxed, shared activities.” Yes, that’s it.
So What? While those of us who grew up prior to our modern-day digital deluge might chuckle, this is a very positive trend for younger generations. Over the past few years, research has indicated that loneliness is on the rise, and it’s often exacerbated by our all-consuming technology trends.
Now What? If your teen expresses an interest in soft socializing, give them some encouragement. It’s not always easy to put yourself out there, but fun, safe, in-person activities are a great way to connect with others and build a healthy social circle.
