What do LEGO, banknotes, cats and world travel all have to do with each other? You’ll find all of them prominently featured on Chris Burton’s YouTube channel, Half-Asleep Chris.
First, the LEGO: Burton is an avid collector of the multicolored bricks, and plenty of his videos showcase him building whole sets (or, sometimes, just from scratch).
Burton worked for some time at a currency exchange, and his duration there gave him plenty of knowledge about a variety of banknotes. In these videos, Burton explains the features and images on currency, providing viewers with the history behind them and the reasons for their inclusion.
As for cats, Burton has had a lot of them over the years, and they show up in his videos quite a bit—either in asides or as the stars of the show.
And when Burton’s not at home, he’s traveling the world, vlogging his journeys through places like Singapore and New Zealand.

Burton is very creative. He builds some ideas in LEGO from scratch. Additionally, and his stop-motion style requires plenty of time and effort. In one video, Burton goes into the work that’s needed for his stop-motion animations. In many videos, he incorporates his cats as part of the creativity, using them as size references, sometimes building various things for his pets or just using them as cute asides.
Outside of his creative endeavors, Burton’s educational videos are informative, whether they’re dealing with the places he visits, the historical figures he discusses or the banknotes he encounters. This last category in particular offers a unique look into the designs and images on various bits of currency from around the world.
Burton has also used his channel to raised money for a group called charity: water, which is an organization that provides clean water to communities in need by installing wells, rainwater catchments and piped systems.
CONTENT CONCERNS
One video denoting instances of vandalism to famous pieces of art begins with a sly joke about the size of the statue of David’s genitals. (“Why does he have such an extraordinarily small crack on his foot?” Burton asks as the camera happens to pass by the statue’s groin area on the word “small.”) A banknote featuring Alan Turing leads Burton to detail the history of the man’s life, including the fact that Turing was gay. In another video, Burton briefly shows a LEGO set released to celebrate the LGBT lifestyle.
An educational video discusses how a man died while attempting a speed record at Loch Ness. The video on Alan Turing references the man’s suicide. Burton talks about one of his cats passing away in a video or two.
CHANNEL SUMMARY
Half-Asleep Chris is one of those channels that uploads videos on a variety of topics. That’s often a risky strategy on YouTube, threatening to dilute the theme of the channel and thus lose subscribers. But in Burton’s case, it seem to have paid off. And to his credit, Burton is quite engaging through it all: Viewers who come to the channel for LEGO may find that, despite no prior interest in watching a video on currency, his banknote videos are rather interesting.
As channels go, there’s not too much that’ll concern parents, aside from a few more adult moments (referencing sexual matters and death) as mentioned fully in our Content Concerns section. But for those who stick around, they may enjoy Burton’s creativity—no matter the video subject.
