YouTube Channel Review

Be careful: Watch Zach King too long, and he may climb out of your computer screen.

OK, that’s not exactly true: He’ll climb out of his computer screen.

Well, that’s not exactly right either.

You see, Zach King’s eponymous YouTube channel is all about magic videos. In one, he dives out of a TV screen to escape a massive explosion; in another, he gets abducted by aliens; in a third, he dives into his couch cushions to retrieve the TV remote and finds himself stuck in a cave.

These primarily short-form videos are, of course, built on visual illusions, forced perspective, behind-the-scenes work and some VFX (the magic of editing, some might say). Regardless, he hopes to entertain.

POSITIVE CONTENT

King’s videos are unique, impressive and fun. The sheer variety of scenarios will keep audiences entertained and guessing about what trick might come next. And he occasionally gives viewers a glimpse behind the scenes, letting them in on how he and his team made many of their videos.

In an interview with PRWeek, King notes his desire to keep his channel’s content family friendly. Because his audience is predominantly younger, when partnering with brands, he refuses to work with “alcohol or smoking brands, or brands that have edgier clothing.”

Some of King’s videos focus not on his magical acts, but on his family. In those videos, he talks about cherishing time with his wife and kids, and he makes it very evident the love he has for his family.

In another video, King discusses how his success came slowly; he spent many years working through failures to make ends meet before his channel took off. He encourages his viewers to not let failure discourage them, since success often takes more than one try to obtain.

King often brings fellow YouTubers and famous celebrities into videos to collaborate.

King is a Christian, as he notes on his other channel, FinalCutKing.

CONTENT CONCERNS

We see very light violence in a few videos—such as a CGI plane crash or Darth Vader throwing a man with the Force. As for other issues, King escapes prison by phasing through the bars—and accidentally ends up in his undershirt and boxers in a humorous moment.

We heard one use of “d–n” and “crap” from a guest on the channel. We also heard a couple misuses of God’s name. In a presentation, King tells his audience about the time he made merchandise for his other channel, FinalCutKing—a mug with the letters “F.C.K.,” which King admits he didn’t think through until after the mugs were made.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Zach King offers viewers with a variety of short clips filled with “magical” moments. And though parents will want to be mindful of a few minor issues, his channel remains relatively family friendly.

Kennedy Unthank

Kennedy Unthank studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics. He’s also an avid cook. He thinks the ending of Lost “wasn’t that bad.”
