Sorry, Katniss. You may shoot a mean arrow, but sometimes there’s just no beating a talking snowman.
OK, so Olaf the snowman is really a secondary character in Disney’s Frozen. A pair of princesses anchor this frosty film. But really, all we really need to know is that Frozen rolled and patted its way to a $31.6 million estimated take this weekend, claiming the box office crown in its second weekend of wide release. It’s the sort of haul that makes Disney’s head honchos feel downright summery.
But true to form, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire didn’t fall without a fight. The second installment in The Hunger Game series collected a tidy $27 million in its third weekend, landing it in second place and bringing its 2013 North America cume to $336.7 million. And if that’s not enough to warrant a swanky party at the Capital, Catching Fire also became the No. 1 movie of the year worldwide. Its $673.4 million total flew past Man of Steel’s $662.8 million global take.
With Frozen’s success, perhaps it’s appropriate that Out of the Furnace was given a somewhat chilly reception by moviegoers. Despite the presence of Hollywood heavyweights Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson, Furnace generated a lukewarm $5.3 million—enough for third place, but barely.
Thor: The Dark World continues to loiter amongst the elite, thumping its way to another $4.7 million. And Delivery Man, Vince Vaughn’s curiously heartwarming comedy, is delivering some surprisingly strong results as the weeks trundle on. It earned $3.8 million to move up to No. 5.
Don’t count on Delivery Man sticking around the Top 5, though—or for Frozen to repeat its victory. A certain dragon will fly into theaters next weekend, which could turn the box office into a place of sheer desolation.
Final figures update: 1. Frozen, $31.6 million; 2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, $26.2 million; 3. Out of the Furnace, $5.2 million; 4. Thor: The Dark World, $4.8 million; 5. Delivery Man, $3.7 million.
