YouTube Channel Review

What if all the Pixar movies were connected? Are the Jedi in Star Wars evil? What if Harry Potter had been sorted into Slytherin house? These questions and more are answered by the YouTube channel SuperCarlinBrothers.

Jonathan and Ben Carlin are real-life brothers who formulate theories about popular movies, challenge each other in trivia tournaments and are outrageously fanatical about Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, Pixar and the Harry Potter movies.

Whether the brothers are trying to convince you that Marvel’s Black Widow is still alive or viewing their ranking of every power inEncanto’s Madrigal family, you will learn more than you ever thought there was to know about these franchises.

Jonathan (called J) and Ben’s format has changed quite a bit since they started in 2012. When the brothers first launched SuperCarlinBrothers, their channel was a weekly conversation between the two of them. J posted one day, and Ben responded via video the next. The topic? Pretty much anything. Videos included “10 Worst Ways to Wrap a Gift,” “How to Open Doors” and “Girlfriend Help.” But even in these early days, the Carlin brothers’ inner nerd shined through.

Their channel and YouTube careers took off with the release of their video, “The Pixar Theory.” The Carlin bros shared this theory created by Jon Negroni, proposing that every Pixar movie is connected. Soon after, the SuperCarlinBrothers of today took shape.

Now, the brothers focus solely on fandom franchises. In their most popular videos, J and Ben explain movie plot holes, share real-world fandom news and discuss the latest blockbusters.

POSITIVE CONTENT

The Carlin brothers know these franchises well, and they adeptly articulate positive themes from the content they review. For example, in the brothers’ review of the movie, Soul, they discuss the harm of becoming overly obsessed with success and the importance of experiencing simple joys in life.

Plus, J’s and Ben’s enthusiasm for stories and fandoms is infectious, as is their ability to think critically about them.

The Carlin brothers are also family-oriented. Although they typically keep their personal lives private, both brothers are husbands and fathers who clearly take family seriously.

CONTENT CONCERNS

Like the franchises the brothers review, the SuperCarlinBrothers seems to support the lifestyles of LGBT individuals. In their review of the movie, Lightyear, for instance, they commend it for being the first animated movie with a same-sex kiss.

J and Ben generally keep their language family friendly. The only profanity we could find was in “Top 10 Favorite Harry Potter Moments” when the brothers play a clip from the movies containing the word, “b—h.”

On that note, we’d be remiss to address the franchises covered on the channel. Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, Pixar and Disney often have their own content concerns. In addition to showing clips from these movies, the brothers delve deep into their plots and lore. If one of these franchises isn’t right for your family, SuperCarlinBrothers might not be either.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

J and Ben Carlin offer fun and creative perspectives on well-known franchises. Their theories and takes on these movies provide opportunities to relive nostalgia and excitement for old and new stories. Their lively personalities capture the magic and whimsy of the films they review, and it is no wonder their audience of over 2 million subscribers continues to grow. While the brothers’ worldviews may differ at times from those of a traditional Christian family, and while they may talk about franchises that aren’t suitable for yours, their channel is generally both interesting and entertaining.

The SuperCarlinBrothers may have you thinking deeply about “nerdoms” new and old.
