Darkness hides inside us all. A darkness that, once revealed, is difficult to hide again.

This is what first year college graduate, Lennon, has come to understand.

Exactly one year ago, before Lennon went off to college, she attended a raging graduation party in her hometown in Hawaii. There, sex, drugs and alcohol were all present. So were bad decisions and cutting words. Lennon found herself in a room with her twin sister, Allison, admitting deep pains. She told Allison that not only did she have sex with Allison’s crush, but that their mother–who committed suicide years before–never really loved Allison.

It was enough to make anyone lose it.

But instead of staying to make sure Allison was okay, Lennon ran from her own monsters and horrific decisions and drove into the night with a group of her intoxicated friends. All she wanted to do was clear her head. And perhaps she would have had she not accidentally hit and killed Allison, who was walking on the road by herself.

In one instant, Lennon and her friends made the gut-wrenching decision to avoid prison sentences by placing Allison’s body in a deep, dark cave–the same cave where Lennon and Allison’s mother took her own life, years prior.

Their final story was this: Allison, a depressed and aimless girl, ran away. After all, if no one snitched, no one would ever find out about what happened on that dark and dreary night.

But someone knows. Someone knows what Lennon and her friends did. And whoever that someone is, he or she is not ready to let it go. In fact, this violent, mysterious being will stop at nothing to give Allison justice and to reveal just who Lennon really is.

Amazon Prime Goes Full HBO.

Amazon Prime’s I Know What You Did Last Summer is a reboot of the 1997 horror film featuring Freddy Prinze Junior.

If you’ve seen the original, you know that sexual content and violence were fundamental to the film. But this latest reboot would make the original film blush.

The main character here, Lennon, is a young woman known for her drug use, her depression and her sexual prowess, the latter a tool she uses to get whatever she wants. Her twin sister, Allison, was a quiet bookworm who also wrestles with deep depression and a sense of hopelessness ever since their mother’s suicide years before. And while Allison was fine with being a virgin and making real connections with people, Lennon and her friends prefer the shallow side.

Her occasional best friend, Margot, is a wealthy, social media influencer with parents who act like reckless teens. Johnny is a gay musician who hides his true identity and passions from everyone. Riley is a cool, level-headed drug dealer ready to move on with life and Dylan is an intelligent, calculated “nerd” who would rather talk than party.

As the show progresses, each of these characters reveals dark secrets about themselves as violence runs rampant. Not only do we see murder and blood throughout each 45-minute episode, but we also get a glimpse into what Amazon Prime must believe is the daily life of a teenager.

Sex, promiscuity, nudity, intense drug use and depression are all very pervasive. Profanity is quite shocking and each plot line feels as if it’s trying to outdo HBO with content that makes the TV-16 rating here feel wildly inappropriate.

Episode Reviews

Oct. 15, 2021: “It’s Thursday”

Allison attends a wild graduation party against her will, but when she meets up with her promiscuous twin sister, Lennon, the entire night takes a turn for the worst.

A young woman is hit by a car and dies on impact. A group of teenagers attempt to hide the body in a cave and hide the murder from the police. They also tell the story of a cult of people who killed themselves in a cave. A young woman opens her closet door to find a severed horse head hanging in her closet, blood dripping everywhere. A teen boy plays a violent video game. Lennon admits to cutting her wrists.

Lennon has sex with her sister’s crush (we don’t see anything, but we do hear the twins arguing about the act). Lennon dances with and kisses both men and women. Lennon tells Allison to perform oral sex on a guy she likes so that he will like her. Lennon makes fun of Allison for being a virgin, while Allison tells Lennon the only reason she progresses in life is because she’s willing to manipulate people with sex. A teen boy is called a “stunning queer king,” while his friend asks if he would be interested in a threesome. We see a teen boy urinating in a pool, his genitals completely exposed. Women wear provocative clothes and men and women alike dance sensuously.

High school graduates attend a party, with parents present, where all sorts of things take place, such as sex and underage drinking, as well as the use of drugs like cocaine, Ketamin and marijauna. A few people smoke cigarettes. A group of teenagers drive while intoxicated.

Allison reflects on the darkness within every person while passing a local shop where the sign reads “healings, teachings, tarot cards and crystals.” A group of teens argue about what happens when you die; one says that he believes in hell, one says she believes in a power within while another says that in his heaven, “gays” are allowed in. Afterward this young man asks God to receive the soul of a young woman who has just been murdered.

A teenage social media influencer includes her parents in her dance videos but is extremely disrespectful to them.

God’s name is misused a few times, paired with “d–n.” The c-word is uttered once. The f-word is heard over 40 times and the s-word is used over 10 times. Other profanity includes multiple uses of “b–ch,” “a–” and “p-ssy.” A teen girl uses an inappropriate hand gesture.
