Florida Man

Florida Man season 1

Kennedy Unthank

TV Series Review

When Mike gambles, he loses. It’s how he lost his money, his job, his friends and his wife. It’s how he fell into heavy debt under mob boss Moss Yankov. And it’s why he’s working off his debt as Moss’ yes-man.

But Mike may have finally found a way out of the hole he’s in. Moss’ girlfriend, Delly, suddenly up and fled in her birthday BMW—down to Coronado Beach, Florida. And Moss agrees to clear up a sizable portion of Mike’s debt as long as Mike can find and bring Delly back.

Well, find her Mike does. She’s following up on a tip regarding a sizable amount of sunken Spanish gold just waiting to be plundered. And because Mike’s done a bit of adulterous … plundering with Delly, she wants him to join her.

But fleeing with a mob boss’ girlfriend and finding alleged Spanish gold? That’s a gamble with astronomically low odds.

Ah, but who is Mike kidding? Gambling is how he got into this situation. Maybe this time he’ll hit the jackpot.

Smelling Up the Swamp

Some of the strangest crimes happen in Florida. One man was arrested for allegedly throwing an alligator through a Wendy’s drive-thru window. Another was charged for sitting down to eat pancakes in the middle of the road. A third man was accused of practicing his karate on swans. “Florida Man” crime articles are so popular that the concept has its own Wikipedia page to explain it.

Netflix’s Florida Man has its own crimes, too.

Mike and Delly frequently have revealing sex, and it’s not uncommon to see the female protagonist topless. And as Mike deals with his connections to the mob, plenty of bloody violence will be in the offing, too. That’ll include a man whose body is seen chopped into pieces, a man whose broken bone sticks out of his shin and lots of blood-soaked headshots. And yes, the swearing is quite heavy, too.

And those things just might have more bite than any reptilian Florida could ever host.

Apr. 13, 2023 – S1, Ep1: “The Realest G-dd–ned Place on Earth”

The Philadelphia-based Moss sends Mike to bring Delly back from Florida, but Mike finds the job is bit more complicated than it seems.

A couple women expose their breasts. We see and hear Delly have sex with Mike twice, and Delly is without a top more often than she has a shirt or bra on. Delly is also seen in revealing lingerie. In another scene, Mike spots a drowning woman and dives in to save her, but the rescue causes the woman’s bikini top to fall off, and the woman accuses Mike of assaulting her. When Mike goes into the ocean to retrieve the top, he is bit by a shark, and people on the internet speculate that the animal bit his genitals off. This joke is referenced for some time throughout the episode. We also hear a reference to prostitutes. A song references checking out peoples’ rears at the beach.

A man trips and breaks his leg, and we see the bloody bone sticking out of his shin. A man is tortured by having a coin shoved into his mouth and choking him with it. We also hear the man being beaten, and we later see his remains recovered from a sewer, having been chopped into pieces. Mike threatens to break a man’s leg with a hammer. We see the resulting shark bite on Mike’s thigh after it has been stitched up. Mike steals a firearm from a sheriff. Someone is found covered in blood under blood-soaked bedsheets. A man shoots a wall, and another shoots into the ocean, hoping to hit a manatee.

People take shots of liquor, drink beers and smoke cigarettes. We hear a joke about drug use.

The f-word is used nearly 35 times, including two uses that are preceded by “mother.” The s-word is used five times. We also hear a crude word for a man’s genitals. “A–,” “h—” and “b–tard” are all used once. God’s name is used in vain three times, including once in the form of “g-dd–n.” Jesus’ name is abused twice. Someone makes a crude gesture.
