The love of her man will get the artist through the “6 O’Clock Blues” and any other trial life throws at her. She’s determined to soldier on amid challenges without resorting to drugs, alcohol, or playing the victim card (“This Bird”). A naive woman regrets a one-night stand (“T.O.N.Y.”) and recognizes a Casanova for who he is (“Would’ve Been the One”). “Ode to Marvin” sees brokenness in society and wonders where it will end.
The fatalistic “I Told You So” has a female breaking off a good relationship because she naturally assumes the fire will fade and he’ll start cheating. Language on this disc is terrible at times. “The Bird” resorts to a pair of f-words, while other songs use the s-word (“God Given Name”), g–d–n (“Valentine’s Day”) and several milder profanities. Suggestive phrases imply sexual activity (“Cosmic Journey,” “Sandcastle Disco,” “Valentine’s Day”) and describe a parade of lovers (“Would’ve Been the One”). Talk of “sweet liquor” mars “Dancing in the Dark.”
On “God Given Name” Solange Knowles asks to be judged on her own merit, not compared to sister Beyoncé. Fair enough: Her late-’60s Motown sound and a few noble ideals get undermined by sex and profanity.
