AN AUDIO SNAPSHOT REVIEW
In The Greening of Whitney Brown we meet Whitney as she’s running for class president of her junior high school. Actually, we soon learn that it isn’t much of a competition. You see, Whitney’s the queen bee of her school and she knows it. In fact, she’s got quite the big head about it. And while she’s not mean-mean, she sure knows where she fits in the pecking order, which translates into not much interaction between those not on her popularity level.
What’s more, her family is incredibly wealthy. So far be it from Whitney to wear anything that doesn’t come with a designer label. That is, until Dad loses his job and the bank repossesses everything. Now the family is forced to head to the country and take residence in grandpa’s dilapidated old place. A new residence means a new school and all of a sudden, Whitney goes from top of the pyramid to hardly even noticed. And the one being that does notice happens to be a horse. Perhaps, what appears to Whitney to be a total disaster may just turn out for her betterment after all.
By the time the credits roll, The Greening of Whitney Brown reminds viewers how unfair a school social ladder system really is. What’s more, it shows that those who have the courage to be friendly to everyone are to be most admired. There’s also a message that fashionable, expensive clothes may be a whole lot of mainly hype. Add to that a subplot that underscores the idea that one can never undo past mistakes, but it’s never too late to make amends; and with this DVD you have the makings of mostly family-friendly film. I say mostly because I do need to point out there are a few minor language issues.
