Movie Review

If you watch the trailer for Drive-Away Dolls, you might be fooled into believing this is a buddy roadtrip comedy wherein two young women accidentally get mixed up with criminals on their way from Pennsylvania down to Florida.

And it is. But it’s also not.

The film’s original title was “Drive-Away Dykes.” And unfortunately, that’s a more apt description.

Much like Hulu’s Fire Island, Plugged In felt that this film’s depiction of lesbian hook-up culture was too raw in spots to describe and review in the way we normally would. But because of its wide release in theaters, we wanted to offer a strong warning to anyone who might inadvertently start watching it under misconceptions from the trailer.

So I’ll repeat Bob Hoose words from his review of Fire Island: Drive-Away Dolls “is as hard-core and pornographic as an R-rating can stand.”

Emily studied film and writing when she was in college. And when she isn’t being way too competitive while playing board games, she enjoys food, sleep, and geeking out with her husband indulging in their “nerdoms,” which is the collective fan cultures of everything they love, such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate and Lord of the Rings.
