Game Review

Madden games have been a part of our collective button-crunching video gameplay for an amazing 38 years. And from those early John Madden Football games—with their slow-paced computer simulations and pixelated, nondescript players—to today’s photorealistic 3D graphics and real-time physics engines, the yearly push has always been aimed at making things a little more realistic and giving players a little more control.

Madden NFL 27 has a lot packed into its gameday duffle bag. There are many, many game modes in the mix that can eat up many, many hours of play.

“Skills Trainer” mode, for instance, is an absolute necessity for players who haven’t been hiking their way through Madden games every year. It guides gamers through interactive tutorials on every phase of play.

If you don’t want to worry over any of that, “Play Now” mode lets you choose your favorite team and jump right into a standalone game with updated player rosters and a realistic broadcast presentation.

“Franchise” mode is designed for those who want a bit more on their plate, letting you manage a team or organization over multiple seasons. And that includes starting with a fantasy draft, dealing with player idiosyncrasies and navigating trade requests.

And “Coach” mode fine-tunes that big picture play a bit by letting you experience your season in the shoes of an on-field manager who simply has to call plays, set up playbooks and make pre-snap adjustments while artificial intelligence executes the gridiron action.

“Superstar” mode is for those who want to create a single customized player and take that potential star through a career journey that stretches from high school to big league glory. (Tight end, edge runner and safety are newly added customizable positions in that G.O.A.T. lineup.)

“Madden Ultimate Team” gives players the chance to build, collect, and upgrade their personal fantasy lineup of current and legendary NFL players. You know, just in case reality is too small for your tastes.

Within all of those modes are this year’s gaming upgrades that include an overhauled defensive system, a new player “behavior” engine and updated physics mechanics. Besides that refreshed defense system, some of the biggest changes include a new timing-based catch system and some new blocking leverage mechanics.

Frankly, that only scratches the surface of what you’ll find in the Madden NFL 27 package.

Yeah, it’s a lot.

Does that mean that this new Madden game will be difficult for younger or casual players? Yes. Yes, it does. But the game offers some beginner-friendly menu settings that can help dial back those demanding control options and give players more simplified game mechanics while they’re learning the ropes.

Madden NFL 27 can be played offline in single-player modes and local head-to-head team games. And players can compete in online contests and modes as well.

POSITIVE CONTENT

Between the hyperrealistic graphics and the real-world player rosters, Madden NFL 27 does an excellent job of giving gamers a fun, lifelike football experience. And it goes to great lengths to include interactive play seen from the coaching and team management perspectives as well.

The game controls and options are more granular and finite than any past Madden game. …

CONTENT CONCERNS

… However, as mentioned above, those new complex controls can feel rather overwhelming at times. There is a lot to get used to here. And sometimes that extended layer of on-field gauges and control demands can get in the way of simply enjoying some digital football play. That will be especially true for beginners.

The other potential in-game irritation centers around Madden NFL 27’s 80-track soundtrack—featuring a blend of high energy rap, hip-hop and hard rock tunes. The game sports a continuously playing loop that plays during game mode selections and during “gameday” action.

This soundtrack features the likes of Bad Bunny, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Lil Wayne, Avicii, DMX, The White Stripes and Wiz Khalifa. However, Electronic Arts uses “radio-edit” versions of the artists’ tracks and scrubs the various racial slurs and explicit profanity that are sometimes a part of them. (Uses of “d–n” and “h—” still pop up.)

Despite the sanitizing wash, those repetitive, heavily rhythmic loops can grate on players after dozens of hours. They can be turned down or off in the game menu.

Madden NFL 27 also features optional in-game microtransactions for a virtual currency called Madden Points. Those points are used to purchase Ultimate Team packs, vanity items and premium field passes.

GAME SUMMARY

Madden NFL 27 adds more controls, more options, more detailed graphics, more weather effects, more game modes and more … more. While fans will rejoice, newbies and casual players could feel a bit overwhelmed.
