Occupy Nickelback

As I’m sure you fine thinkers and bloggers have noticed, we here at Plugged In are always keeping our ears to the ground and our moistened fingers up in the air to keep track of societal shifts, changing winds and the impact that different forms of media can have on all of the above. Well, I think I’ve found a new movement that might have a big impact.

We all know that right about now things are tough for a lot of people. With the economy the way it is, jobs are scarce and budgets are tight. Home prices are falling. Protestors are in the streets. Governments appear ineffectual. And even our sports teams seem to be letting us down. Well, it looks like Detroit has found a way to finally fight back: protest Canadian rock bands!

The rock n’ roll band Nickelback is scheduled to perform at the halftime show for the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. And the fans are standing up en masse and saying, enough is enough! They started a petition to stop those silly old northerners from daring to play their Canadian brand of rock music (snort) during our All-American past time. With nearly 50,000 signatures to date, the people are speaking.

“Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?!” the petition says. “Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions?”

One petition signer put his anger this way, “Haven’t the good people of Detroit been through enough?”

Hey, in this day and age of protests and petitions when our schools are failing and our kids are sexting, why not find a good villain? And if we’re gonna yell at something, why not blame rock n’ roll? Canadian rock n’ roll, that is.
