Movie Tuesday: Smith’s Back in ‘Black’

MIB3MovieTuesday.jpgEarth’s mightiest heroes finally met a foe they could not vanquish at the box office: Will Smith. Nearly 10 years after he last donned a dark suit, Smith’s Agent J has faced down Marvel’s The Avengers at the multiplex.

In its first three days in theaters, Men in Black 3 took in an estimated $55.0 million, slightly more than the debuts of the franchise’s first two installments (though trailing both in terms of actual ticket sales when inflation and 3-D premiums are figured in).

Still, we shouldn’t be shedding any tears for Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor and Hawkeye. The Avengers still clocked in at a solid second, netting another $36.8 million.

This means that with Monday’s holiday estimates included, the smash superhero flick has now netted a massive $523.6 million domestically and $1.31 billion internationally. It’s set to pass The Dark Knight’s domestic cume of $533.3 million and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘s total international take of $1.33 billion later this week, which will put it at No. 3 on both charts—trailing only James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic. (And for those keeping score at home, The Avengers sprinted to the $500 million milestone in just 23 days, easily displacing former record-holder Avatar, which took 32 days to reach the same mark.)

Outside of the top two spots it was all about the also-rans. In its second weekend, Battleship listed to another $10.9 million, good for the No. 3 spot. Close behind were The Dictator ($9.3 million) and Dark Shadows ($7.5 million). The only other newcomer in the Top 10 was horror thriller Chernobyl Diaries, which managed to scare up just $8.0 million.
