Yes!
Or no.
Truth is, all of them blasted across the finish line in a virtual three-way tie, according to studio estimates: End of Watch and House at the End of the Street each made around $13 million, according to their respective makers, while Warner Brothers is prognosticating a more conservative $12.7 million for Trouble with the Curve—an apparent lag, sure, but still in the running. We won’t see the official photos for this photo finish until this afternoon when true dollar figures are released.
‘Course, given that all three films combined made less than $40 million, maybe it doesn’t matter that much. The 3-D re-release of Finding Nemo, had it doggie paddled into theaters this week instead of last and duplicated its earnings, would’ve won the weekend—nine years after its initial release and, oh, eight after most families added the thing to their DVD collections. (Not that Dori would remember that far back.)
Speaking of Nemo, Pixar’s fabulous finny tale (tail?) swam into fourth place with around $9.4 million. That brings the movie’s lifetime gross to a whopping $370 million—21st of all time.
It’s doubtful that Resident Evil: Retribution will match Nemo’s lofty numbers. The horror/action flick dropped almost 70% of its audience and tumbled from first to fifth, clearing just $6.3 million.
Dredd, meanwhile, had a pretty (ahem) dreddful opening weekend. The comic-book inspired blood-and-guts actioner gunned down $6.3 million for sixth place.
