Movie Monday: Godzilla

We knew it was gonna be big.

I mean, it’s Godzilla, right? The 350-foot lizard may need an atomic alarm clock to get up in the morning, but once he’s up, Godzilla’s the definition of big. And sure enough, when Japan’s favorite scaly son stomped into North American theaters this weekend, it caused a big stir, earning an estimated $93.2 million—maybe enough to patch up a San Francisco building or two. Godzilla not only embraced the box office title in his massive claws, his film also scored the second biggest opening of the year, trailing only Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

With Godzilla smashing everything in sight, Neighbors wisely packed up and vacated the premises. Last week’s champ earned about $26 million—a tidy second-week haul but less than a third of what big green pulled down. Still, Neighbors finished ahead of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which finished third with $16.8 million.

Speaking of millions, Disney’s new feel-good-flick Million Dollar Arm could now, I suppose, be called Ten Million Dollar Movie … which, these days, ain’t all that great. The baseball flick earned $10.5 million to finish a disappointing fourth. We’ll see if Million Dollar Arm can rally in the later innings, but for now, seems as though Mickey and Co. can safely return their attention back to counting its billion or so from Frozen.

Meanwhile, The Other Woman earned $6.3 million to push Heaven is for Real down to sixth and close out the Top Five. But mourn not for Heaven: The $4.4 million it earned this weekend pushes its total gross to $82.2 million, making it the fifth highest-grossing Christian movie ever, according to Box Office Mojo—behind only The Passion of the Christ and three Chronicles of Narnia movies.

Final Figures Update: 1. Godzilla, $93.2 million; 2. Neighbors, $25.1 million; 3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, $16.8 million; 4. Million Dollar Arm, $10.5 million; 5. The Other Woman, $6.3 million.
