Movie Monday: The Guardians of the Galaxy Outnumber (and Out-Perform) the Super Mario Bros.

Game Over.

Sorry Mario and Luigi, but much like my older sisters used to boot me off our Nintendo 64, the Guardians have arrived to kick off the summer and shove The Super Mario Bros. Movie out of the box-office high score.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earned $118 million domestically this weekend. (Globally, it hit $282 million.) Comparatively, Vol. 3 had a stronger opening than 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy ($94.3 million), but not quite as good as 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million). Still, it outperformed February’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which only opened to the tune of $106 million, ranking Vol. 3. That makes it the 16th-best opening of all time in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

The Super Mario Bros. (now in its fifth weekend at the box office) is still collecting coins, though. It earned an estimated $18.6 million to come in second place. Evil Dead Rise, while coming in third, didn’t even earn a third of that with just $5.7 million. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. scrounged up $3.4 million to come in fourth.

Finally, John Wick: Chapter 4 fought hard, earning $2,359,000. But the power of love (not to mention five new songs from Celine Dion) proved to be stronger, allowing Love Again, starring Ms. Dion and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, to snag fifth place with $2,425,000.

Next weekend, we’ll get a look at Guardians 3’s hold on the box-office, as it faces very little competition until the high-octane summer season really starts hitting on all cylinders with Fast X on May 19.

But you don’t have to wait until then to join our ongoing conversation about the weekend box office (as well as last week’s and this week’s episodes of The Plugged In Show). We’ll be streaming The Plugged In Show Aftercast live on Instagram (@pluggedinteam) this afternoon at 3:00 pm MDT. And we’d love to have you join us to talk movies and pop culture.

  1. -Ha-Ha! Rocket kick Mario’s butt! It is ironic that it takes a Chris Pratt as a live action movie actor to beat up Chris Pratt as a voice actor and quite frankly I like him better as Star Lord than him as Mario. I guess Nintendo won’t be making a Zelda movie now since Super Mario
got bombed while Guardians of the Galaxy rules the theaters once again. Long live Star Lord!

    1. – Mario’s still probably going to massively outgross Guardians 3’s final haul.
