Maybe Steve from A Minecraft Movie should’ve put some holy water in that iron bucket of his.
That’s because Sinners, the music-heavy vampire-slaying film set in the Jim Crow South overtook A Minecraft Movie for first at the box office over the weekend. In its debut, Sinners sunk its fangs into $48 million. And that bumped all of the movies in last week’s top five down a notch; none of them changed positions from last week.
After its two-week lead, A Minecraft Movie sank to second place, adding another $40.5 million to its wooden chest. Still, having earned $343.8 million domestically in just three weeks already makes it Warner Bros’ 8th highest earning domestic movie of all time—just behind American Sniper and ahead of Joker. And it’s doing very well internationally as well, adding another $376.2 million to its take thus far for a very robust $720.8 million worldwide cume.
The King of Kings set a couple records of its own. Its first and second weekends in theaters both eclipsed the earnings of The Prince of Egypt. That means that The King of Kings holds the new record for highest-grossing opening weekend for an animated Bible film. What’s more, it also had a noticeably low drop between its opening weekend and second weekend box-office receipts—low enough to rank it as the 35th smallest week-to-week fall ever. Its income fell a mere 9.3% compared to last weekend. And with $17.3 million this week, that’s good enough for a third-place win.
The Amateur took fourth with $7.1 million, and Warfare finished in fifth with $4.86 million.
Looking down the list, The Wedding Banquet, a remake of a gay romcom, took 12th place. It made $923,000 in its opening weekend. And Sneaks, depicting sentient shoes, squeaked in at 14th with $531,000.

I saw “Sinners” yesterday. It was quite an audacious, atmospheric movie, a really fascinating take on the “vampire” genre, and it had some really impressive musical set pieces. If any of your readers choose to see it, one word of advice: DO NOT jump up and leave once the credits start to roll at the end, because a couple of minutes into the closing credits there is an important epilogue. On another subject, I’m surprised Plugged In has not reviewed “The Pitt” (on Max) yet. The series had been getting gushing responses from the medical community.
Super glad to hear, I think Coogler is talented, I’ve wanted to see this, and I’m used to staying all the way through the credits for epilogues (thanks, Marvel, though I kind of wish we’d go back to movies that actually end when the credits start).
