Romance and money fail to satisfy on “I Don’t Need a Man.” Tunes celebrate forever love (“Stickwitu”) and fresh starts (“Feelin’ Good”).
“Beep” is a barely censored exchange between the Dolls and will.i.am that features a man ogling pretty girls equally eager to be objectified. The lead singer gloats about her “hotness” on “Don’t Cha,” which ups the ante of inappropriateness with talk of condoms, lingerie and a ménage à trois. The girls plead for a reluctant man to undress them (“Buttons”), and have an insatiable sexual appetite on “Stickwitu” (“We’ll be making love endlessly”). There’s lots of moaning and groaning on the dance track “Hot Stuff (I Want You Back).” “I Don’t Need a Man” promotes independence to a fault with its apparent nod to masturbation (“I don’t need a man to make it happen … I can get off when you ain’t around”). Lustful desires and the suggestion of oral sex add to the crudities (“Wait a Minute”). It seems playing the part of nasty girls requires a sassy helping of mild profanity. Fit, immodestly dressed bodies appear on the cover and throughout the liner notes.
Although this disc settles down by the last few songs, the overall raunch factor is high. In short, PCD is a musical tease by a bunch of sex kittens.
