“What Happened to You?” condemns a drug user for self-destructive insensitivity. “Come Out and Play” seems to condemn gangs and guns, however . . .
. . . The singer awaits a chance to gun down rude drivers on “Bad Habit” (“I open the glove box, reach inside; I’m gonna wreck this f-er’s ride”). Other cuts wallow in despair and disillusionment (“Self Esteem,” “Something to Believe In,” “Nitro,” “Not the One”). “Self Esteem” alludes to a girlfriend’s alcohol abuse and sexual appetite (“Late at night she knocks on my door, drunk again and she’s lookin’ to score”). Shouting the sentiments “Kill! Rape! Die!” at the end of “So Alone” ruins an otherwise neutral song. Hateful obscenities make regular appearances.
Inconsistent at best, this disc deserves to be Smashed (in the interest of family harmony, it may be wise to discuss the album’s problems with you teen before taking a sledge hammer to it). If it hasn’t already invaded you home, skip it.
