“Drugs or Me” is about a man desperate to rescue a woman blinded by addiction. Upbeat and optimistic about life, “Futures” wonders, “Why is it so hard to find balance between living decent and the cold and real?” Isolated lines seek contentment (“23”) and answers amid confusion (“Kill”).
Even though a romance is essentially over, the singer wants one more night of passion (“Just Tonight”). Drinking, driving and parking for sex are central to “Night Drive.” While not explicitly sexual, a guy propositions a co-worker for a date and “whatever’s going to happen tonight” (“Work”). Elsewhere, a despairing man visits a hotel bar (“Kill”), and a possible drug reference mars “The World You Love” (“You should see me high”).
Brokenness. It appears throughout this disc, sometimes in obscure critiques of how addictions can destroy relationships. Shunning the high-octane pop-punk of “The Middle,” Jimmy Eat World is evolving. While this introspective project may not intend to glorify self-destructive behavior, teens could get the wrong impression.
