Pro-Social Content

On “Along Came You,” Estefan expresses love to her young daughter, elevating motherhood as her “one true purpose.” The artist’s amorous praise extends to her husband on the title cut. She also pledges commitment through relational trials (“I’m Not Giving You Up”) and a willingness to “go the distance” to fulfill a promise (“Reach”). The soul-searching “Path of the Right Love” may refer to God in its plea to “reach out for love” and share kindness with the hurting masses. In an industry downright phobic about differentiating behavior as “right” and “wrong,” Estefan does just that with “Higher,” a song that promotes getting ahead in life without lying, cheating or stealing. The fun “You’ll Be Mine (Party Time)” rejoices in life and love, never in sexual carousing or drunken shenanigans.

Summary Advisory

This former lead singer for Miami Sound Machine had a difficult childhood and was nearly killed in a bus accident in 1990. Is she bitter? Not in the least. Her wholesome, upbeat and unapologetic celebration of life puts whining Gen-Xers to shame. A terrific pop effort.
