“Rainbow Wings “warns of succumbing to greed and empty promises (“Don’t sell your soul for a pack of lies/I met the devil in disguise”). Cherry’s heartrending “Conversation” involves a father forced to come clean about a dark past to the son who idolizes him–a strong argument for personal integrity. He also longs to wipe away the “Permanent Tears” of a lonely girl with no family. “Shooting Up in Vain” spies on a spiraling drug addict as he searches for his next self-destructive high. Elsewhere, a loving couple reassures one another with kind words (“Worried Eyes”).
Minor. Sleep quells pain on “Comatose.” Obscure lyrics about a man uncomfortable with murder, yet unrepentant of it leaves a bad aftertaste (“Indecision”). Wine flows as part of a romantic evening on “Save Tonight.”
Eagle-Eye is the son of jazz legend Don Cherry and brother of pop star Neneh. His chart debut includes few problematic elements and some great messages about responsible, drug-free living. A mixed blessing.
