Matthews contemplates the brevity of life and certainty of death (“Gravedigger”). A desert encounter with a fasting man of faith inspires the artist to want what he has on “Save Me” (“You don’t need to prove a thing to me /Just give me faith, make me believe”). In a world gone mad, the singer gleans comfort from memories of a love who is no longer with him (“Oh”), and tries to calm a crying infant with the assurance that the world isn’t beyond hope (“Baby”). “Up and Away” is a romantic love song. No stranger to “Trouble,” a guy expresses an almost religious desire to put it behind him. He wants to be more generous to the underprivileged (“Seek Up”) and appreciates how a single moment can be life-changing (“So D–n Lucky”), but …
The profanity of the title and “my god” mar the lyrics. “Some Devil” has a drunk man battling his demons. “Stay or Leave” alludes to alcohol and sex shared with an ex. A five-song, live bonus disc intensifies the references to sex and alcohol, and adds marijuana to the mix.
Mostly positive stuff. Toss out the bonus disc and the remaining problems aren’t overwhelming.
