Jesus’ presence is a comfort (“Hush”), and two lines from “Amazing Grace” find their way onto “The American Dream,” however . . .
They join a deafening chorus of songs promoting the mass consumption of marijuana, cocaine and alcohol. Afroman boasts of peddling crack to young children on “Palmdale,” and driving under the influence on “Let’s All Get Drunk Tonight” (“Hope I don’t wreck when my vision gets blurry . . . Don’t give a d–n about a DUI”). “Because I Got High” oozes apathy as it blames marijuana for personal trials, but this is no cautionary tale; it’s a tongue-in-cheek endorsement that also refers to oral sex and masturbation. “Crazy Rap” carries on about a string of casual encounters involving anal sex, oral sex and jumping into bed with a partner who turns out to be a cross-dressing man. Raw language runs through the disc like raw sewage. Graphic sexual slang. Numerous f-words. There are also lewd propositions (“She Won’t Let Me F—“) and a statement about having sex with “all the little girls down in Sumrall” (“Mississippi”).
“Because I Got High” earned High Times magazine’s Doobie Award for Pot Song of the Year. Appropriate. This artist’s life seems to revolve around numbing the synapses and engaging in perverted sex.
