Hellbilly opens with an innocent voice reciting a rhyme about children afraid of being decapitated by the devil. Zombie takes over from there, growling lines such as “Dead I am the one, exterminating son” (“Dragula”), “A child bride with blood eyes got Satan on the brain”(“How to Make a Monster”) and “Violator, desecrator/Turn around, meet the hater” (“Demonoid Phenomenon”). “Meet the Creeper” seems to applaud the murder of a baby, and the eerie, nihilistic MTV hit “Living Dead Girl” finds the singer asking a woman to die for him. Beyond his diseased lyrics, Zombie’s liner notes feature ghastly images including a man raising a sword over a partially clothed woman with the words “See! Girl’s Head Chopped Off Right Before Your Eyes!” Any surprise in light of the cover art?
Young fans are assaulted by occult themes and warped philosophizing about torture and death. “This [CD] is a full-blown evil raging beast,” said Zombie who, as a boy, wanted to grow up to be Alice Cooper. Who says music doesn’t influence children?
