“Perfectly Still” applauds boundaries (“If nothing’s off-limits, we’ll pay”) and, along with “My Car,” looks back at painful mistakes, desiring not to repeat them.
Mild profanity mars the bouncy, yet ultimately defeatist “Follow You Down,” which concludes, “What the h—, we’ve already been forever d–ned.” Similarly, the singer confesses, “I’m high and I’m hopeless” on “Competition Smile.” Teens could get the impression that morality is relative from “I Can’t Figure You Out.” Several tracks give an approving nod to cigarette smoking. An indiscretion is swept under the rug on “Whitewash” as the artist chooses to forget the sin ever happened rather than atone for it.
While not patently offensive, Congratulations I’m Sorry has several tracks that spoil an otherwise enjoyable effort. Too bad, because the Blossoms’ country-infused, traditional rock melodies have the potential to unite parents and teens willing to meet in the middle, musically speaking. Maybe next time.
