“Pretty Words” warns women about the consequences of one-night stands. “No Future in the Past” is a no-booze blues tune focused on recovering from a failed romance. Working through tough times, communicating and preserving relationships are the themes of “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away.” “I Still Believe in You” is an apology from Vince to his wife for not making their relationship his first priority (“Everybody wants a little piece of my time, but still I put you at the end of the line”).
A carousing husband tries his wife’s patience and ignores her preaching on “One More Last Chance.” “Under These Conditions” sends mixed messages about fidelity. Though the parties involved resist cheating on their spouses, they clearly want to. Potential consequences deter them rather than moral conviction.
Great vocal work. If only Gill’s thoughtful melodies and heartfelt stories of love lost weren’t clouded by these less honorable messages. The title track was voted country song of the year for 1992 and earned Gill a Grammy for best male country vocal performance.
