“Tear Down These Walls” encourages loving one another. On “When I Say No,” Gibson demands respect from a date who has designs on her body. Monogamy and faithfulness in the age of AIDS is the focus of “Kisses 4 One.” “Love or Money” applauds a lover’s devotion in the face of the world’s pleasures.
“Shock Your Mama” is trouble. Although Gibson claims it was never meant to be taken seriously, it suggests a wild sexual ride (“Though I’m all good news in my Sunday shoes, I’m gonna wear you out on Saturday night”). “Losin’ Myself” involves total surrender to a lover. On “Little Birdie” she is so deep in love she “can’t tell wrong from right,” and eventually gives in (“baby, what the h—?”).
These messages are a surprise in light of Gibson’s outspoken stand for virginity. Here she seems willing to send mixed signals to young fans. Passion runs through all of the themes on this album. Unfortunately, they’re not consistently positive.
