Turtle Power Rules the Weekend

Most turtles content themselves with their built-in mobile homes and eating greens at the local watering hole. But when you’re an  anthropomorphized terrapin with mad martial arts skills, wiling the days away by the pond just isn’t an option. That slick sewer hideout and tricked-out garbage truck don’t come free, y’know. You need a job. And it seems like four such turtles have a pretty good one.

The titular green-backed quartet from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows earned an estimated $35.3 million greenbacks of their own this weekend. That’ll buy plenty of cheese pizza and, perhaps, some much-needed conditioning gel for their rat sensei Splinter. ‘Course, that small haul of box office lettuce  wasn’t quite what the movie’s creators at Paramount were hoping for: The last Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie made $65.6 mil right out of the shell opening weekend, en route to a $191.2 million tally. Still, the sequel did win the box office crown for the weekend. Cowabunga.

X-Men: Apocalypse—another movie about a band of marginalized mutated crimefighters—slipped to second this week, collecting $22.3 million. That’s a hefty 66% drop. Clearly, Professor Xavier could’ve spent more of his telepathic time encouraging us non-mutants to see his movie.

The weepy romance Me Before You finished before every non-superhero movie out there. It banked $18.3 million to finish third. In a lackluster week at the box office, it was the only newcomer to really surpass expectations. (The weekend’s third freshman flick, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, never really got going, earning just $4.6 million for eighth place.)

Alice Through the Looking Glass—already pegged as one of the year’s biggest busts—didn’t redeem itself much this weekend. It earned just $10.7 million, and found itself looking up at more successful flicks. The Cheshire Cat only had one thing to grin about: All those birds in paw’s reach just below Alice. The Angry Birds Movie  feathered its nest in the Top Five with $9.8 million.

Final figures update: 1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, $35.3 million; 2. X-Men: Apocalypse, $22.8 million; 3. Me Before You, $18.7 million; 4. Alice Through the Looking Glass, $11.3 million; 5. The Angry Birds Movie, $10.2 million.
