An isolated line on “I Put a Spell on You” expresses love. That’s it.
Manson refers to himself as “the god of f—” (“Everlasting C***sucker”) and “the face of p—, and s— and sugar” (“Kiddie Grinder”). Beyond the profanity and its talk of sodomy, the former could also be interpreted as applauding date rape. “White Trash” enumerates a teen girl’s sexual proclivities. A racial slur is central to “Rock & Roll N*gger,” on which the artist lays claim to the title “all-American Antichrist” before concluding the track with screams of “f— you!” “F— Frankie” repeats the song’s title ad nauseam. On the mocking “Sympathy for the Parents,” a female voice conveys concerns about satanic music in a religiously self-righteous tone.
Outrageous, androgynous makeup. Inflammatory stage antics. Anti-Christian rhetoric and a satanic pose. Toss in lyrics such as the ones on Children and there’s ample reason to keep kids away from this band. The artist, issued this devilish warning to parents in Rip magazine [2/95]: “Raise your kids better or I’ll be raising them for you.” Heed it.
