Sometimes, you just have to ask:
How does someone become the announcer for the National Spelling Bee?
What’s life like for someone who can’t taste anything?
What is it like to be the developer behind the “worst video game ever?”
They’re the kind of questions that you’d likely never come up with on your own. But they’re also the kind of questions that’ll stick in your head until you know the answer once they’ve been asked.
Don’t worry, Great Big Story has your back.
There are plenty of stories here that’ll interest people of all ages. Many of them highlight acts of kindness or friendly people. They also let us take a look into the unique circumstances and cultures of others.
Though the videos are typically under five minutes, the storytelling is succinct enough to provide us with all the relevant information we need to learn just a little more about the world around us. The videos are engaging, and, in most cases, quite content free.
That being said, after watching roughly 100 of this channel’s videos, there are some that do have some issues. For instance, we hear one use of “d–n,” and one story about the man who voiced many movie trailers contains a censored f-word.
Additionally, roughly a dozen of the videos I watched were made in support of the LGBT community. In one, a luchador wears a tight costume that reveals part of his rear. In another, men wear drag, and some people wear nun and priest outfits, apparently mocking Catholicism. One story is about a mom and her underage teen, both of whom transitioned; we see the mom on the beach topless, and it’s clear she’s had a double mastectomy. Also in the video, we hear tragically about how the teen was bullied by other kids and told to commit suicide.
Originally launched by CNN in 2020, Great Big Story made thousands of videos before briefly shutting down in 2020. But in 2023, the channel was rebooted by whynow Media, continuing its search for more and more stories to tell.
The vast majority of the channel is generally free from content problems. And many of these inspirational video vignettes provide insight into interesting stories.
Prospective viewers should note that the channel does contain a number of videos supporting the LGBT community. And a few include mild or censored profanity. But otherwise, Great Big Story will engage viewers in interesting tales and insightful stories.
Kennedy Unthank studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics. He doesn’t think the ending of Lost was “that bad.”
