For a few brief moments early in Canadian rapper Drake’s hit song “You’re the Best,” it seems romance might actually rule over rabid raunchiness. “Baby, you my everything,” he croons. “You all I ever wanted.”
But a not-so-nice reference to “other hoes” serves as our cue that things are about to go downhill … fast. Drake’s seemingly romantic sentiments, it turns out, are merely a prelude to dirty daydreaming about his current girl’s special ability to supply the best sex he’s ever had.
If 16 repetitions of “you the f‑‑‑ing best” isn’t bad enough, Drake gets increasingly graphic (too graphic to print here) as he crudely describes his lover’s anatomy and brags about his own sexual prowess.
Toss in references to “b‑‑ches” and “n-ggas,” and it’s clear that 22-year-old Aubrey Drake Graham, who spent eight years starring in Canada’s hugely popular teen TV drama Degrassi: The Next Generation, is just the latest hip-hop phenom to internalize and regurgitate the genre’s often debased and degraded view of sex.
Suffice it to say that love doesn’t have much to do with it.
