Movie Monday: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

It looks like a Marvel-ous spring.

Just one week after Captain America: The Winter Soldier was knocked off the top of the box office heap by The Other Woman, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man swung into theaters and handed the title back to Marvel (and its big-eared Disney CEO). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spun an estimated $92 million—a veritable world wide web of cash.

Granted, it wasn’t quite the opening that perhaps Marvel had hoped for. With great power comes great expectations, after all, and the Spider-Man franchise has been quite powerful. The original Spider-Man, released a dozen years ago, earned $114.8 million its first weekend (and unofficially launching the superhero movie craze). The 2012 reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, collected $151.1 million in its extended Fourth of July opening frame. Still, I can’t imagine Aunt May’s too disappointed.

After one week on top, The Other Woman slipped back to second-fiddle status, earning $14.2 million. Heaven is For Real held tight to No. 3, losing less than 40% of its audience and pocketing another $8.7 million.

Captain America is finally showing signs of economic fatigue, but don’t feel too bad for our shield-toting hero. The Winter Soldier earned another $7.8 million this weekend, bringing its grand total to about $237.1 mil. Of course, that lags behind 13 other superhero flicks, including all four previously released Spider-Man movies. But hey, that just gives Steve Rogers and company something to shoot for, right?

Rio 2 wrapped up the Top Five with a $7.6 million weekend.

Final figures update: 1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, $91.6 million; 2. The Other Woman, $14.4 million; 3. Heaven is For Real, $8.6 million; 4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, $7.8 million; 5. Rio 2, $7.7 million.
