Movie Monday: Real Steel Still Real Deal

real steel.JPGHollywood may get weak in the knees over 1980s remakes, but the movie-going public thinks they’re just plain weak.

Or at least that’s my interpretation of this weekend’s box-office derby, which saw last week’s champ Real Steel claim the title yet again—this time over the reboot of 1984’s Footloose. Hugh Jackman’s robo-movie thumped those retro, rebellious Footloose teens by just a few hundred thousand greenbacks (boxofficemojo.com estimates that Real Steel earned $16.3 million, while Footloose shuffled to $16.1 mil)—but as any boxer will tell you, a win is a win.

The Thing—a prequel of sorts to the 1982 movie of the same name—might as well have been frozen in a block of Antarctic ice, for all the heat it generated at theaters. Scaring up a mere $8.7 million, The Thing probably earned enough to cover its dog food budget but perhaps not much more. My guess is that we’re unlikely to see a Dr. Seussian-titled Thing 2 anytime soon.

Moviegoers poured $7.5 million into The Ides of March’s box office coffers—not enough for this political thriller to win this week’s straw poll. It’s possible that George Clooney wishes he had included a dolphin in the cast, given that Dolphin Tale earned yet another $6.3 million this weekend. The month-old family friendly movie has collected $59 million in the last month. That’s a tally its makers should flip over.

Oh, and for those keeping an eye on Courageous, Sherwood Baptist’s newest film is still in the Top 10, earning another $3.4 million for eighth place (edging the curiously overlooked comedy The Big Year). All told, Courageous’ tally stands at $21.4 million.
