Movie Monday: Filled (Again) With Hunger

hunger 3.JPGLet me be honest: I’ve had my fill of The Hunger Games.

Nothing against the movie, mind you. I haven’t seen the thing—which may make me one of only three dozen people in the United States that haven’t. It only feels like I have, given what I’ve heard and read and even written about the Games over the last month or so. Frankly, we’re running out of pictures to use for this blog. If the film repeats again, we may have to get someone around here to dress as Katniss for the picture next week. Personally, I vote for Paul Asay.

The biggest movie of 2012 (thus far) just keeps getting bigger, adding an estimated $33.5 million to its coffers to run away with the box office crown for the third straight week. Games has now cleared the $300 million mark for North America (worldwide, it’s taken $460 million) and—despite a bevy of strong summer contenders waiting in the wings—may wind up being the most lucrative film of the year.

Not that the Games had much competition this week. Katniss and Co. overwhelmed any and all comers, most notably American Reunion, the latest and hopefully last chapter in the sex-addled American Pie series. This long-in-the-tooth installment mustered $21.5 million its opening weekend, settling for a distant second.

But while American Reunion may have felt repetitive and tired, it was, at least, a “new” movie. Titanic, which crashed into third place, was pretty much the same film James Cameron created back in 1997—only in 3-D. The film didn’t exactly sink: Its $17.4 million take is almost enough to cover the movie’s 21st-century makeover. But it’s certainly no king of the world this time around.

Wrath of the Titans, meanwhile, earned $15 million and fell from second to fourth, while Mirror Mirror netted $11 mil and a fifth-place finish.

Oh, and for those keeping track, October Baby is still collecting at the box office: It finished 15th this week and has earned about $3.6 million overall.
